The table
below shows the approximate number of persons with the GANT surname in each census,
and for 2000 from the United Kingdom 2000 Electoral Register. Figures for 2000
only include those over 18 years of age, so the actual totals will be more than
is shown here. As far as possible, the 2000 totals are equivalent to the old counties,
i.e. South Humberside is included in the total for Lincolnshire.
The figures show that the distribution of the surname has remained much the same
since 1851, with the highest concentrations being in Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk,
Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. While the figure for Yorkshire has more than doubled
since 1901, the total for London has plummeted to just a little more than a quarter
of those recorded in 1901.
